The Children's School has its roots in the child-centered, discovery-based approach to early childhood education.
We believe:
-
Children flourish in a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment.
-
Play is an integral part of a quality program serving young children.
Skills and concepts are developed and enhanced through guided play activities and practiced and applied through free play.
-
Young children learn and construct knowledge as a result of meaningful experiences (instruction).
The Children's School provides a balanced curriculum that encourages and supports the academic, social, and physical development of the learner. A thematic approach integrates early literacy and math skills, long-term science and social studies projects, and creative art, music, and movement. A thematic approach helps learners make connections between what they already know and what they are learning.
-
Learning is both individual and social and takes place within a social/cultural context (community of learners).
Learners actively construct their own understanding of the world through guided instruction and interactions with others. Throughout the day at the Children's School, small-group, age-specific activities challenge children to develop at an appropriate pace with their peers. In addition, multi-age groupings provide an opportunity for children to learn from each other in a family-like setting.
The Children's School emphasizes cooperation and teamwork as major components of a positive and productive learning environment. We provide abundant opportunities for children to develop as social persons who care about others and contribute to the larger community.
-
Young children reach different levels of learning and development at different times. The Children's School strives to incorporate developmentally appropriate activities that are both age-appropriate and individually appropriate for each child.
The Children's School is an inclusive setting that welcomes some children with special needs each year.
