Four-Stage Career Exploration
Following the four-stage career exploration model will help students connect their educational experiences with their future goals as they relate to academic and career decisions.
Students will:
- Identify values, interests and skills
- Select a major and possible future career and/or educational paths
- Define and refine goals
- Become involved in experiences, activities and events throughout their college years in preparation for future career opportunities and aspirations

First Year - Realize your potential
Define academic and career goals; assess skills, interests, and values
- View What Can I Do With This Major?
- Become involved with student clubs and organizations
- Develop a professional resumé
- Attend career/job fairs and networking events
Sophomore Year - Realize your possibilities
Continue to examine future career options, confirm major and learn about experiential opportunities by following all of the above, plus:
- Begin to define short and long-term career goals
- Consider studying abroad
- Identify ways to gain experience through internships, field experience and practicum placements
- Consider research opportunities with faculty members, part-time/summer work, immersion trips and volunteer positions
- Take a road trip to one or more companies
- Attend career development workshops
- Assume a leadership role in a club, organization or activity
- Research graduate/professional school options
- Enhance resume or portfolio
Junior Year - Realize your performance
Enhance skills and clarify career goals by gaining practical experience outside the classroom by following all of the above, plus:
- Obtain an internship, a part-time/summer job and volunteer for community service
- Communicate with alumni about their career paths
- Become a student-affiliate member of a professional organization
- Participate in on and off-campus recruiting efforts
Senior Year - Realize your future
Be aware of the process necessary to achieve post-undergraduate goals (employment, graduate or professional school or service) by following all of the above, plus:
- Secure Fall and/or Spring semester internships
- Update resumé and enhance interview skills
- Communicate with employers and/or explore graduate/professional school options
- Develop a network of career and personal contacts
